Hidden behind the historical Nanaken Nagaya in the northern outskirts of Tokyo, we salvaged this abandoned land, laden with memories and now overcome with invasive plants and concrete crumbles. To activate the space and celebrate its innate beauty, we placed CNC-milled plywood pieces along an arbitrary grid, pinned ever so slightly into the thin, unpredictable soil layer, sliding and connecting to give way to the existing terrain and vegetation.
The linear pieces—scaled low to engage the ground—organize, adapt, and offer definition to the chaotic site. The resulting in-between spaces foster nooks for Ewelina Skowronska’s sculptures, echoing her own reflection about the nature of change and collective memories placed in our bodies.
